Intro to Computers

Residents will learn the importance and use of programs such as Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer.  Residents will be able to use these programs without difficulty to design a resume and surf the web with ease.

Mommy & Me
Focuses on facilitating developmentally appropriate play between Mother and Children in a safe and nurturing environment.  Play activities will be used to increase attachment in the mother-and-child relationship.  Creating structured play time while OTS models age-appropriate child interactions will improve family’s quality of life while residing at a DV shelter and beyond.

Coping Skills
Assists residents in becoming aware of the issues in their lives, identify how they deal with them and to find healthy ways to cope with the stress and frustration that comes along with.  Residents will learn new and practical coping strategies to replace their current unhealthy strategies for managing everyday problems.

Home Management
Residents learn the skills needed to live independently. Topics such as money management, time management, safety, and home maintenance are discussed. By the time the residents move they will be able to manage their household, budget their money, identify safety hazards in the home, organize and create a weekly schedule of chores and necessary appointments.

Freedom Spa
Encourages wellness and socialization between residents.  Residents learn the importance of good nutrition, hygiene and presentation.  The group will incorporate grooming, manicure and different tips on self-care while being in a relaxing and supportive environment.

Cooking Group
Takes place weekly in the training kitchen. Residents will learn how to become independent in the kitchen setting through cooking while learning the importance of healthy cooking and nutrition. Possible hazards are identified, as well as need for equipment and assistive devices.  In this group, residents will be oriented to the FH convection oven, stovetop and microwave and in meal preparation.

Leisure Group
Assists residents with leisure exploration and encourages socialization.  This group will allow residents to explore leisure activities in the community as well as to try various arts, crafts and hobbies that can be performed at their leisure.  Leisure activities that are family oriented are covered as well.

Travel Training
Assists residents to allow travel in NYC independently and devises customized strategies to teach travel skills that address the specific needs of people with disabilities.  Travel training within the community is essential because transportation provides us all with access to the wider opportunities of society such as employment, postsecondary education, job training programs, recreation. Traveling by public transportation systems such as bus and subway enables us to go to work and come home, go to school or other training programs, visit friends, take care of daily needs such as grocery shopping, and enjoy recreational activities.
