Each April, the federal Office for Victims of Crime helps lead communities throughout the country in their annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW), which will be observed April 10–16, 2016. This year’s theme -Serving Victims, Building Trust, Restoring Hope – underscores the importance of early intervention and victim services in establishing trust with victims, which in turn begins to restore their hope for healing and recovery.

NYC events include:

On April 10, 2016: 

The Center Against Domestic Violence – designated as a 2016 Community Awareness Project by the U.S. Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) — will host a community awareness event honoring crime victims of domestic violence. National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is intended to help communities increase the general public’s awareness of the rights and services for victims of crime.

The event’s focus – Serving Victims. Building Trust. Restoring Hope. – will feature an awareness day rally and fair in Cadman Plaza Park. The Center will partner with allied domestic violence organizations, local businesses and public officials – including special greetings by Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams – to promote awareness and let people know about available services for crime victims. Hot 97 – Where Hip Hop Lives – will be present and providing entertainment between 12 – 2 pm. There will be presentations given by the aforementioned groups, as well as, survivors of domestic violence and advocates. Promotional giveaways and informational material will be distributed. Exercise and boxing gym, WORK Train Fight, will take attendees through a free workout and self-defense routine between 11 am – 12 pm.

On April 12, 2016 :

To commemorate this important week and improve their response to victims of crime, this year the New York City Police Department (NYPD) will host a gathering of victim advocates and police officers from around the city.

NYPD Victim Advocate Fair on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at 1 Police Plaza, in the 1st Floor Auditorium. The goal is to provide a venue for crime victim advocates and police officers to get to know one another by having face-to-face interactions and discussions about helping victims rebuild their lives. This day will provide valuable opportunities to exchange information on services and resources available to crime victims. Approximately seven hundred officers will be in attendance at this event over the course of the day. Lunch will be provided.
