Summer Streets is DOT’s annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space—our streets. On three consecutive Saturdays in August, nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are opened for people to play, run, walk and bike. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation for New Yorkers, their friends and family. In 2014, more than 300,000 people took advantage of the open streets.

Summer Streets extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets, with easy access from all points in New York City, allowing participants to plan a trip as long or short as they wish. All activities at Summer Streets are free of charge, and designed for people of all ages and ability levels to share the streets respectfully.

Following are fully accessible activations:

Hand-cycle Activation:

Come test out a hand-cycle on an organized bike circuit around Cooper Square at Astor Place! Your opinion about the experience will contribute to the possible development of a citywide hand-cycle initiative in the future.

Participants will be able to test our model, high profile prototype, which allows for easy transfers between a wheelchair and the hand-cycle. People of all abilities are encouraged to join and take a hand-cycle for a ride.  There are weight and height limitations for this activity. We ask that all interested parties be able to independently transfer or bring a friend who can help getting on and off the hand-cycle.

This activation will be centrally located at Astor Place (between 8th Street and Cooper Square) from 7am to 1pm. The activation will run all three days of Summer Streets; Saturdays, August 1st, 8th and 15th.

Adaptive Power Soccer Activation:

Wheeling Forward, in collaboration with the United States Power Soccer Association (USPSA), is hosting a power soccer clinic Foley Square (right in front of the NY Supreme Court House) to let New Yorkers with disabilities try adaptive power soccer and have a truly unique experience. Visit www.powersoccerusa.org to learn more about power soccer.

People with disabilities, and those without disabilities, will be able to try Power Soccer, a power wheelchair-based adaptive soccer activity. Training sessions and games will be scheduled throughout the day. Also, we will have well-known freestyle soccer players Frankie Flo and Vince Grady on-hand to teach some tricks and do things you never thought possible with a soccer ball!

*Loaner power wheelchairs will be made available so manual wheelchairs users and those without disabilities who are not wheelchair users can participate in the fun of Power Soccer*

All necessary equipment will be provided and personnel from the United States Power Soccer Association will be on hand to lead all activities.

Times: One-hour sessions between the hours of 8am – 1pm

Location: Foley Square, on Centre St. between Pearl St. and Worth St.
